Melody Reigns

The magpies are singing in the back streets of St. Kilda,

Charlie Parkering their joy.

Pandemic silence

Has freed them from

Our murmuring motors

From our impatient tunelessness.

The Magpies are singing in the back streets of St. Kilda,

Melody reigns.

Call Me

I’d decided

To go through

A shakuhachi phase,

Purchased a plastic

Rendition

Of the instrument.

In the same message

She told me

That the words

Plastic shakuhachi

Made her happy,

That her bum

Was getting chubby,

That everything

Was slipping away.

I told her,

When things

We’re slipping,

To call me,

To chant

Chubby bum, chubby bum, plastic shakuhachi

Chubby bum, chubby bum, plastic shakuhachi,

And I would come.

But she didn’t call,

And everything slipped away,

Slipped away,

Like

My shakuhachi

Phase.

Messing About In Boats

“Hello Captain Roy,

I wrote a poem about you,

Do you want to hear it?”

“No.”

“It goes like this:

Ahoy ahoy

Ahoy ahoy

It’s always a joy

With Captain Roy.”

“That was shit.”

“I thank you.”

Tweet Poem

“Today I walked down Rowland S. Howard Lane”
Sounds like
The first line
Of a poem,
But it’s just something I did
Today.

The Susan Song - song lyrics

If you think it will make you happy,
I'll buy you brightly coloured and shiny things.
If you think it will make you happy,
I could hock this guitar, buy you a diamond ring.

I can wear all your rules, your timetables,
I can calm you down when you're unstable,
If you think that will make me happy,
You had better think again.

If you think it will make you happy,
I can hang out with your coven of ghastly friends.
If you think it will make you happy,
I can listen to your tales of past boyfriends.

Let you squeeze until you break my balls,
Spend my weekends in shopping malls.
If you think that will make me happy,
You had better think again.

If you think it will make you happy,
I can listen to you whine, I can take the blame.
If you think it will make you happy,
I can let you slander my good name.

Listen to all your tales of woe,
If it's all the same to you, I'll just go,
'Cos if you think that will make me happy,
If you reckon you can make me happy,
If you think that will make me happy, well,
You had better think again.

Red Brown Dust, song lyrics

She’s an inland girl,
From an inland town,
This wide brown land
Is bringing me down,
I’m yearning for the sea.
I’m yearning for Josie
But I’m yearning for the sea.

I’m a seaside boy,
From a seaside town,
Gotta’ leave my girl
I’m homeward bound,
I’m yearning for the sea.
Yearning for Josie,
Yearning for the sea.

The red brown dust
Is in my mouth,
I’ve had enough
I’m heading south,
Got that salt air in my hair
I’m Port Fairy bound.
Josie is my girl,
I’m sure she’ll understand,
She’ll find another man,
There are ten men for every woman
In this town.

I love my inland girl,
I hate her inland town,
She won’t go, I won’t stay,
There’s no middle ground,
I’m yearning for the sea.
I’m yearning for Josie,
Yearning for the sea.

Isolation

A solitary man,
A sharp blade
With no handle.
